Limb abnormalities

Limb abnormalities encompass a wide range of conditions. We care for even the most difficult limb differences, with the singular focus of helping you reach your personal goals. We offer individualized treatment plans that include a combination of therapies. Some of our treatments include bone transport, limb lengthening and correction of malalignment.

Nonunion fractures

When a broken bone fails to heal through traditional treatment or conventional surgery, it is referred to as a nonunion fracture. We understand the frustration these fractures can bring, and how much they can affect quality of life, so we offer a variety of treatments, including:

  • Bone stimulation — This procedure involves a small device that is used to produce ultrasonic and pulsed electromagnetic waves.
  • Placement of bone grafts — Bone graft placements provide fresh bone-forming and supportive cells.
  • Surgery — Surgery establishes stability and provides healthy blood supply and soft tissue at the fracture.

Osseointegration

Bone-anchored prosthesis is known as osseointegration. This process allows surgeons to firmly and permanently anchor a prosthetic in place, and allows for the possibility of increased range of motion and greater stability.

Pelvic stabilization

Pelvic stabilization may use bone cement to substitute for normal bone. Our physicians use incisions less than an inch long and real-time computerized tomography (CT) scans in the operating room to plan the surgery. Screws are then placed in the bone and left alone. A bridge is then built between the screws and healthy bone, causing a rebuilt pelvis.

This procedure is performed through small incisions, so there is very little blood loss. Additionally, your bones don’t need to grow back, so you can typically go back home within 24 hours and use the aid of a crutch for the first few weeks.

Revision surgery after a total joint replacement

If you need revision total joint replacement, our team can perform surgery to help meet your needs and return to the activities you love doing. Revision surgery is typically performed due to:

  • Bone loss (osteolysis)
  • Instability
  • Loosening of a component, such as the femoral, patella or tibial
  • Persistent pain
  • Stiffness
  • Surgical site infections
  • Wear on the implants or plastic lining

Support services

We visit regular clinical conferences to discuss difficult cases with a team of surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, social workers, psychologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation specialists and leading researchers. These conferences offer insight and advice from specialists.

We also host regular support groups for those with challenging or complex treatment plans. You can discuss specific day-to-day challenges and your treatment plan amongst a group of people going through something similar.

Nurse navigators

We have nurse navigators who will guide you through the treatment process. These experienced nurses are focused on your individual needs and work to ease the stress that may be associated with ongoing care.

Institute for Limb Preservation (ILP) is a group of physicians that specialize in complex orthopedic care, to which other orthopedic surgeons often refer. For more than 30 years, this group — located at HCA HealthONE Presbyterian St. Luke's and HCA HealthONE Rocky Mountain Children's at Presbyterian St. Luke's — has established itself as the Rocky Mountain region's premier medical community.

Our experience and training

Although the field is technical and extraordinarily complex, our surgeons offer connection. We believe in caring for people with diseases and conditions, not just the diseases and conditions themselves. Due to the type and severity of certain conditions, our care relationship may last for several years, including consultations, surgeries, recovery and overall maintenance. The team develops deep relationships with you while providing autonomy in every decision. Above all, we keep your goals at front of mind.

A large part of our commitment to improving care practices comes from our partnership with the Limb Preservation Foundation (LPF), a vital organization dedicated to the prevention and treatment of limb-threatening conditions, such as cancer, infection or trauma. Led by board member, Dr. Cynthia Kelly, the foundation is a vital resource for patients, raising funds to support research, education, college scholarship and patient assistance programs. Since 1986, the LPF has funded over a million dollars through its patient assistance program to children, teens and adults across the Rocky Mountain region.

Colorado Limb Consultants is also part of the Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute network of physicians. Sarah Cannon, the Cancer Institute of HCA Healthcare, offers integrated cancer services with convenient access to cutting-edge therapies for those facing cancer across the United States and United Kingdom.

Sarah Cannon’s cancer programs include individualized navigation provided by oncology-trained nurses, more than 1,200 stem cell transplants performed annually throughout the Sarah Cannon Blood Cancer Network, hundreds of clinical trials, and molecular profiling capabilities. Through its services, Sarah Cannon is providing state-of-the-art cancer care close to home for hundreds of thousands of people — a number unmatched by any single cancer center.

Colorado Limb Consultants (CLC) is active in the field, participating in research, working with the Limb Preservation Foundation and being vital members of the Institute for Limb Preservation. CLC is also affiliated with HCA HealthONE Presbyterian St. Luke's.

Our orthopedic surgeons

The highly specialized team of fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons in our practice, Cynthia Kelly, MD, Zeke Walton, MD and Daniel Lerman, MD, have dedicated their careers to the field of complex limb care, including treating bone and soft tissue cancers. Since it is such a narrow focus, our team has an increased level of experience with rare conditions and injuries, often innovating techniques and specific treatment plans.

FAQs

We understand you may have questions regarding your visit, and we are happy to answer them.

Do I need a referral to make an appointment?

Most medical specialists will only accept referred patients. This is mainly to try to ensure that the specialist you are seeing is appropriate for you and your condition. Check with your insurance company to see if a referral is necessary. To schedule an appointment, simply call us at (303) 837-0072 during our working hours.

What do I bring for my consultation?

For your initial consultation you will need to bring a referral letter from your physician if required. You will also need a valid ID, insurance information, reports, X-rays and any other relevant medical information, such as a list of medications you may be taking.

We encourage you to come to your initial consultation with a written list of questions to ensure you don’t forget to ask them when you visit the doctor.

How long do I need time off work after the surgery?

The postoperative recovery period varies based on the surgery. Generally, it is recommended you take two weeks off work to recover from any surgery and to resume light duty following your return to work. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions to follow for a successful recovery.

You should also wait at least one week before driving after surgery. The effects of anesthetic and surgery can impact judgment and reflexes during the first week following your surgery. Your surgeon will provide more specifics after considering your condition.

How do I contact someone after hours?

There will be a point of contact 24 hours a day for any concerns you may have. You will be provided with contact details following your treatment.
