Care Philosophy
Steve Rothenberg, MD is a world-renowned board-certified, fellowship-trained pediatric general surgeon with special interest in minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Rothenberg has dedicated his career to innovating and pioneering new surgical techniques for pediatric patients, which are all designed to reduce the surgical impact on the body and minimize scarring while maintaining excellent medical outcomes.
Dr. Rothenberg completed medical school and general surgery residency at the University of Colorado in Denver. He then spent a year in England completing a fellowship in general thoracic surgery. He then returned to the United States where he completed a two-year pediatric surgery fellowship at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. It was there that he discovered his life's work to care for the surgical needs of children.
Throughout his career, Dr. Rothenberg has maintained a passion for advancing surgical technique to improve outcomes, minimize pain, and reduce scarring. He has led the way in developing many new pediatric surgical techniques as one of the founding members of the International Pediatric Endosurgical Group (IPEG) and a past president. He also was the first chair of the Pediatric Committee for SAGES (The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons) and was a member of the board for six years. Recognized as one of 5280 Magazine's Top Doctors, he was also honored as the SAGES Pioneer in Surgical Endoscopy by the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, an award of high merit given periodically to a physician whose efforts have substantively changed and improved the field of endoscopy. In 2025, Dr. Rothenberg received the William E. Ladd Medal-the American Academy of Pediatrics' most prestigious honor in pediatric surgery, awarded to only 32 surgeons in more than 70 years-for his lifetime of innovation and global impact on the field. Dr. Rothenberg has authored more than 150 publications on minimally invasive surgery in children and has given more than 300 lectures on the subject nationally and internationally. He is also an editor for The Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Journal of Laproendoscopic Surgery, and Pediatric Surgery International.
While Dr. Rothenberg is well-known for his efforts to advance technique, his patients and referring providers also benefit from his steadfast commitment to being accessible to his patients and helping them (and/or their caregivers) understand the condition and treatment options.
Dr. Rothenberg and his wife, Susan, have three children: Jessica, Catherine, and Zachary. He is an avid outdoorsman and spends most of his free time in the mountains of Colorado skiing, hiking, biking, and fishing.
